Beignets

Beignets

Beignets, a fried wheat dough, are beloved worldwide and take on various shapes, textures, and names. Italians have their Zeppole, Mexicans enjoy Bunuelos, Nigerians savour Puff-Puff, and in Cameroon, Beignets are a favourite, though this term can also refer to Puff-Puff. In New Orleans, Beignets have become a signature treat, with eager crowds lining up at spots like Café Beignet on Royal Street or Café du Monde in the French Market to indulge in these powdered sugar-covered delights.

While New Orleans popularised Beignets in the Americas, their origins trace back to West Africa. Enslaved Africans brought many of their culinary traditions across the ocean, including Gumbo and Beignets. In West Africa, particularly in Cameroon, Beignets resemble Puff-Puff but are leavened with baking powder instead of yeast. These sweet snacks are known for their crispy exterior and soft, spongy centre, although savoury versions can also be found.

Lyyah Foods has mastered this traditional street snack, turning it into a gold-standard delight while preserving its unique heritage. Our Beignets offer a true taste of Africa, with a perfect balance of sweet, crispy crust and soft, tender interior.
